On Communication Optimization in Grid Access Middleware for Handheld Devices

This paper describes the optimization techniques for interaction of constrained handheld devices with Grid services by employing the concepts of Jini Surrogate Architecture. Handheld devices in general do not posses enough computational and communicational assets to meet the criteria for utilizing the Grid infrastructure services. We present the design of a middleware approach that aids handheld devices in this regard by wrapping the computational and resource intensive tasks in a surrogate and shifting them to a capable machine for execution. We analyze the reduction in computational intensity at the handheld device, achieved through task delegation, and present the optimization of communication mechanisms that reduce the load on a resource constrained handheld device.
